Myths about iris recognition

Table of Contents

In terms of identification, iris authentication is a highly reliable technology because it is very accurate and difficult to spoof. Iris authentication scan technology has strong matching capabilities and can be typically configured to do as many identifications as needed. However, because the quality image acquisition is so difficult that many attempts are often required to get to the point where a match can take place.

THE CONCEPT OF IRIS RECOGNITION

The concept of iris biometric recognition is pretty simple. Capture a digital photograph of the eye, detect and separate out which part includes the iris. Use the image analytic methods on the image portion to look for similar features and create a binary template and then match the template against a previously stored template from the same eye. If the templates show a close match, it is from the same person. If it doesn’t match, there’s a high degree of chance that the template wasn’t created from the same eye. This way it can also sense any fraudulent behavior.

SO WHAT ARE THE MYTHS?

Social media and movies play an important role in developing an individual’s mindset. Iris recognition technology is often used in films and they portray some odd picture of all other biometric scanning devices which creates a wrong perception in an individual’s mind. People adopt what they see. These platforms depict myths and misconceptions about the technology. Following are the myths that must have crossed your mind;

1. SCANNING EYES WITH LASER

In any action or science fiction movie, they portray a false image of iris recognition security method. They show that if you have an iris security system installed in your office or any other place, it will scan your eyes with the help of lasers that will grant you access to pass through. Well, this is totally false, an iris authentication device is not linked with lasers because the rays are not good for the naked eye.

2. IRIS AND RETINAL SCANNING ARE THE SAME THINGS

People always consider iris authentication and retinal scanning as the same thing. Iris textures are different whereas retinal structure has a capillary network which is a different part of an eye. So comparing these two don’t make any sense.

3. IRIS CHARACTERISTICS ARE NOT UNIQUE

Iris characters are unique as every individual in this whole world has a different iris texture. So next time, if you see a movie where a random person uses his fake lens to manipulate the system’s data, consider it as a movie scene only.

4. IDENTICAL TWINS HAVE IDENTICAL IRIS

It is the most common myth that everybody must know. People consider that identical twins must have identical eye structures so they can fool an iris recognition device easily but that’s not true. Every human being on this planet has a different eye structure.

CLOSURE OF THE MYTHS

All the myths and misconception about an iris recognition device have no basis in facts. An iris recognition security system is better from all other biometric devices.
