Data protection: why it matters?

Table of Contents

How do you know you’re not getting snooped? Are you really sure the system you are accessing is secure?

Well, safety starts with awareness, awareness starts with you. The data you process every day, it relates to your private, professional, or social life. In the online environment, where a massive amount of data is shared and transferred around the globe promptly, it is increasingly difficult for people to maintain control of their information. This is where data protection comes in.

WHAT IS DATA PROTECTION?

Data protection refers to the practices, safety measures, and rules put in place to protect your personal information and ensure that you remain in control of it. In short, you should be able to decide whether or not you want to share some information, who has access to it, for how long, and for what reason.

WHY DATA PROTECTION IS IMPORTANT?

Working in an office requires an employee to share a lot of data. Sharing data may bring benefits, and it has also become necessary for us to do everyday tasks. You can’t work without and it also engages other people with you in today’s society.

But it is not without risks. Your personal data exhibits a lot about you, your thoughts, and your life. You put your information at risk when you transfer files. Your data might look attractive to a hacker or a snooper who has been waiting to rob you. In this world, it could an easy task for someone to hack you. Your data can easily be exploited to harm you, and that’s especially dangerous for vulnerable individuals and communities, such as journalists, activists, human rights defenders, and members of oppressed and marginalized groups. That is why this data must be strictly protected.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR DATA?

Do you think your data is secure? If yes, then think again because keeping your information safe is not as easy as it used to be. Here are a few ways that can help you protect your data;

PROTECT YOUR PASSWORDS

The data you have is not yours. It belongs to your company and at the end of the day, you are answerable for it. Lock your system with a strong password while leaving your workstation. Setting an easy password is not a smart choice. You must know how easy it is to steal someone’s identity and password. Install a strong password manager to keep your passwords strong and unique across all of your other devices and accounts.

UPDATE YOUR SOFTWARE

It’s not easy to update your system’s software every day. In order to do so, you must clear out some folders and documents. Well if you know, old files can corrupt your system and to protect your data in that situation requires you to have software to clear out the bugs and errors. This includes antivirus software that your operating system might need. Cyber threats change frequently with more advanced techniques so it’s better to play on a safe side.

CLOSURE TO DATA BREACHING AND THREATS

To protect your data from hacking you must stay active and take notice of what is happening around your work station.
